Vehicle technical inspections prevent 723 deaths per year

Date:

Thanks to the technical checks carried out in 2021, at least 15,641 traffic accidents, 13,110 injuries and 148 deaths were avoided. In economic terms, the study shows that ITV’s contribution to saving lives and reducing road accidents can translate into savings of at least €395 million.

In addition, if the vehicles that failed the inspection had done so, an additional 13,517 traffic accidents, 11,643 injuries and 146 additional deaths would have been avoided, with an economic impact of €370 million.

These are the main conclusions of the study “Contribution of the ITV to Road Safety and the Environment”, presented by the Duque de Santomauro Automobile Vehicle Safety Institute (ISVA) of the Carlos III University of Madrid, commissioned by the Spanish Association of Cooperating entities of the administration in the technical inspection of vehicles (AECA-ITV).

This study, which updates the previous update carried out in 2018, also shows a significant increase in the number of vehicles involved in road accidents with fatalities whose ITV had expired at the time of the accident. As well as the correlation between the seriousness of road accidents and the age of the vehicles involved; which shows that between the ages of 5 and 6 the number of serious traffic accidents (with fatalities) related to technical failures increases considerably. Hence the importance of vehicles having their periodic technical inspection up-to-date.

From an environmental point of view, ITV broadcasters avoided 575 premature deaths from exposure to particulate matter (PM) by 2021, translating into economic savings of at least €706 million. And if absenteeism in passenger cars is eliminated, an additional 207 premature deaths from exposure to particulate matter could be prevented in one year.

The report reveals disturbing data on absenteeism in the ITV across the main vehicle types as an estimated 26.48% circulate in the passenger car segment without passing the technical inspection, meaning at least 4,717,227 of the inspections that should be performed, have been performed. to be executed. This is an increase of 64.04% compared to 2017.

With regard to Light Freight Vehicles (VTML), the absenteeism rate in the ITV was 54.00% as 3,242,570 of the mandatory inspections were not carried out. This is an increase of 82.12% compared to 2017.

With regard to mopeds and motorcycles, absenteeism due to illness was 65.10% in 2021, as 1,535,722 mandatory inspections were not performed. This represents an increase of 11.42% compared to 2017.
