The Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Reyes Maroto, has described it as “essential” to strengthen the installation of electric vehicle charging stations in Spain to accelerate electric mobility.

“Clearly, we need to make a qualitative leap to speed up the installation of these points so that it is not an element of uncertainty for the buyer. Our aim is for Spain to become the frontrunner in electromobility in Europe,” he added.

On the other hand, Maroto has underlined the strategic role of the auto parts sector in the Spanish industry. Among other things, it has indicated that the sector contributes more than 75% of the value of the vehicle, invests three times the industry average in R&D&I and is the fourth largest car producer in Europe, with a network of more than 1,000 companies in Spain.

For his part, Sernauto’s president, Francisco Riberas, made a brief look back at the current situation in the sector. In particular, he called the current stage a “perfect storm” erupted by the war in Ukraine that has sent the auto industry into its “hardest” period in many years.

In that sense, he warned that the current situation will not improve in the short term as there is a threat in production volumes and this will continue. For example, Riberas has emphasized that this has served as a catalyst for the war to cause inflation in many countries, including Spain.

In this scenario, Sernauto’s president has predicted that it will worsen with the potential recession of many economies, which would affect many of the agents in the chain. To soften this context, the president of the association defends the strengthening of cooperation between companies and administrations.

“We have to be very ambitious in our proposals and in this public-private partnership,” added Riberas, who also stressed the importance of companies getting financing, including in the form of different guarantees to coordinate regional aid.

Finally, the president of Sernauto has indicated the relevance of the renewal of the fleet in Spain. “What we need to achieve is to get older cars off the road,” said Riberas, who also pointed out that it’s time to ask consumers to do their part too “to accelerate electrification.
