Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan believes “at the negotiating table” in an end to the war in Ukraine. He met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and UN Secretary-General António Guterres in Lemberg, Lviv, on Thursday for talks. Russian President Vladimir Putin is informed of the outcome of the conversation.
Erdogan announced this on Thursday after the talks in Lviv. “I continue to believe that the war will eventually end at the negotiating table. In fact, Mr Zelenskyj and Mr Guterres see it that way too,” the Turkish president said. He will also evaluate the results with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Diplomatic success in grain deals”
After the meeting in western Ukraine, Guterres called for an end to the war. The diplomatic success of the grain deal in July was “just the beginning of a positive dynamic”. One point raised by all participants was the situation surrounding the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant. Guterres demanded the withdrawal of all troops, Erdogan warned of a nuclear disaster: “We don’t want to see another Chernobyl.” Zelenskyj also calls for demilitarization of the nuclear power plant.
Russian sabotage action at nuclear power plants?
The Russian and Ukrainian sides blame each other for the shelling of the nuclear power plant (NPP). Moscow recently warned of a supposedly planned Ukrainian attack on the nuclear power plant, now Ukraine’s military intelligence is being answered with a possible Russian act of sabotage. The Russian occupier had unexpectedly announced a day off for Friday, only a small part of the working population may remain in the nuclear power plant. To date, Ukrainian employees have been deployed to carry out Russian orders.
Because of the day off, the secret service now fears a terrorist attack. No further details were given and the information could not be independently verified. The Russian side also spoke of Friday as the time of “the provocation”.
At the meeting in Lemberg, the United Nations and the Turkish government want to find a way to successfully enter into the negotiations. UN circles believe that talks between the warring parties Ukraine and Russia about a ceasefire will only be possible if neither side can gain more ground and both abandon the pursuit of victory. Currently, however, the Ukrainian government wants to recapture lost territories.
