Practice early. The importance of youth work in the blue light organizations is demonstrated by 13-year-old Lara, who knew exactly what to do when her sister suddenly passed out.
Lara has been a member of the Red Cross youth group in Villach for about a year. When her older sister suddenly collapsed, Lara had to apply what she had learned. She immediately placed her sister in the recovery position, shortly afterwards the girl regained consciousness. Complaining of dizziness, Lara raised her sister’s legs and waited with her for the ambulance. First aid par excellence!
“Wasn’t nervous at all”
What was best for Lara? That she wasn’t nervous at all because she was learning exactly what to do in the youth group. “That’s what youth work in the blue light organizations is all about! The children are slowly but surely being prepared for the tasks and can then use these skills not only ‘on the job’, but also at any time in their private lives!” Villach’s youth fire brigade agrees.Of course, her sister is doing well again, probably she has had too little to drink.
