A motion of censure overthrows Montenegro’s government

Date:

The Prime Minister finds this measure irresponsible if the opposition does not have a plan to form a new cabinet

The government of Montenegro falls after 100 days. Parliament passed a motion of censure against Dritan Abazovic’s director in an extraordinary session on Friday evening. Of the 81 existing seats, 51 deputies were present and 50 of them voted in favour; only one congressman was loyal to the prime minister.

The motion was tabled by the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) after Podgorica signed a pact with the Serbian Orthodox Church in early August to settle relations between the two institutions, despite opposition from the DPS. The socialists announced that negotiations on the formation of a new cabinet can now begin. “We need elections and a stable government,” said lawmaker Danijel Zivkovic, who introduced the initiative.

History repeats itself. The vote came months after another no-confidence vote overthrew the previous coalition government. The prime minister pointed out that this measure is irresponsible if the opposition does not have a plan to form a new cabinet. “I hope we get a new mandate soon. If that doesn’t happen, it is irresponsible and the public should know that it has brought them into instability,” criticized Abazovic, who defended his work by stating that no one could have done more in a hundred days. “Maybe in four years or so. but not in a hundred days,” he said, before highlighting the results in the fight against crime and corruption.

“I’m proud of everything we’ve done in 100 days. We will be remembered as the government that lasted the shortest. We will do everything possible to ensure that the executive branch formed after the elections brings Montenegro to the European Union,” the pro-European politician stressed.
