Single-lane road – secret path as “highway”: residents ask for solution

Date:

A single carriageway between Bad Sauerbrunn and Wiesen in Burgenland warms the mood. A petition passed years ago had no effect. Those affected now want a barrier.

Manfred Gänsdorfer recalls that the Mitterweg, which leads via the shortest route from Bad Sauerbrunn to Wiesen, used to be “an earthy path with deep grooves – partly impassable”. Because living on the Keltenberg became more and more popular and rows of houses were built, the Mitterweg was made roadworthy: lovelessly asphalted, single lane.

Petition to mayor
“All hell breaks loose here morning and evening,” says the 72-year-old, who years ago handed a petition to Wiesen’s mayor Matthias Weghofer, which was signed by 90 percent of residents.

Q: The community has to do something. “We hardly dare to leave the exit anymore,” says Gänsdorfer. “Recently, the neighbor’s grandson was shot by a car that was going way too fast – like everyone else here!”

Private fields
Weghofer refers to powerlessness. You cannot widen the path because the adjacent fields are spread over 50 different farmers. “This is private property. We as a community have no access here.”

Gänsdorfer, who also failed with his request to the district administration, has solutions ready: speed bumps, speed traps – or even a barrier in the middle that only “real” residents can use.
