Because their pilgrimages regularly cause traffic chaos, a church in South Africa is now getting its own highway junction. The local government of the northern province of Limpopo announced this this weekend. Church representatives and authorities speak of a “milestone”.
The Zion Christian Church is considered the church with the largest number of members of African descent. Persecuted as a cult by the apartheid regime, the Free Church today has more adherents in South Africa than any other denomination. In addition to a number of African countries, the Church also has adherents in Great Britain. It opened its first European branch there in 2015.
Every year, millions of believers make a pilgrimage to the settlement of Moria, where the church is headquartered. The Easter weekend spectacle is considered South Africa’s largest Christian gathering. According to church representatives, the construction project should prevent the annual traffic chaos and frequent accidents.
