There is no support for the demand for checks for older drivers – the focus is on prevention and voluntary.
“Age as the only indication is not correct. Young and old drivers are roughly in balance in the accident statistics,” says Aloisia Gurtner of the ÖAMTC. The Automobile Club thus declares a clear rejection of individual requests for mandatory medical examinations for older drivers.
“Compensates for certain limitations”
Older drivers do have certain shortcomings, for example in responsiveness, but are less often under the influence of alcohol and less often under the influence of drugs or with a mobile phone in hand. They would also drive slower and more carefully. “That compensates for certain limitations,” Gurtner says. According to the ÖAMTC, prevention programs are important. You always think about that. They don’t think much about legal regulations. “This had no positive effects elsewhere and has therefore even been abolished in some cases.”
The Verkehrsclub Österreich (VCÖ) says: “It is important to create incentives for other forms of mobility. In addition, GPs should be more involved.” Mandatory examinations are not desirable according to the VCÖ. The Road Safety Supervisory Board (KFV) says: “The KFV is in favor of increased awareness and voluntary training or courses that help develop strategies for preserving or compensating for individual skills and being safe on the road. “
