Two alpine accidents ended fatally on the Hohe Wand in Lower Austria this weekend. One of the dead is an 86-year-old man, the police and mountain rescue gave no further information about the second victim. There were also several alpine operations by mountain rescue teams.
On Saturday, the alpine police were sent to Höflein aan de Hohe Wand, district Neunkirchen, to the “Springlesssteig” because a hiker had probably fallen. Sticks, a wristwatch with a torn metal bracelet and sunglasses were previously found on a sloping section of the trail. The emergency doctor helicopter Christophorus 3 roped the emergency doctor off at the scene of the accident, which determined the victim’s death – details about the identity have not yet been released.
150 meters fell
The second fatal accident occurred on Sunday during a walk that involved three men aged 59, 83 and 86. They all come from the Mödling district. The men were on their way from a parking lot in Grünbach am Schneeberg to the Hohe Wand. The 86-year-old tripped and fell about 150 meters over steep, rocky terrain. Any help came too late for him.
Because after the accident heavy rain alternated with thunderstorms, the emergency doctor helicopter Christophorus 3 was unable to reach the accident site. The investigations at the site in the steep, rocky terrain and subsequent rescue were very demanding due to the constant heavy rain, it said.
