Since the middle of the month, the city of Linz has switched off the lights on bridges, churches and public buildings earlier than usual. Finally, there was the matter of putting the Christmas lights into operation. But this is now off the table. The city center will shine just as much in Advent as in previous years.
“The energy consumption is so low that this tradition should be continued,” said Linz SP mayor Klaus Luger, explaining the decision to keep the Christmas lights. Thanks to a contract of indefinite duration, the assembly costs would remain the same as before at 300,000 euros. The costs are also included in the annual budget.
6000 euros for electricity costs
“Electricity costs are likely to rise from the last 6,000 euros, but that is manageable and affordable,” says Luger. There are no plans to pass the costs on to entrepreneurs. The mayor also believes that Christmas lighting provides a warm and cozy atmosphere, especially in these tense times. “Even in the colder months, we help to brighten up the streets of Linz,” he explains.
