Gazprom has announced that the total shutdown of gas supply through the Nord Stream 1 pipelineconnecting Russia to Germany, for a oil leak detected during maintenance work on the only station that worked so far.

“Until the equipment malfunction is resolved, gas transit through the Nord Stream pipeline will be completely suspended,” Gazprom said.

Therefore, the gas flow will not resume as planned tomorrow, Saturday, after the three-day maintenance work. The gas pipeline was operating at 20% of its capacity.

According to the gas company, representatives of the Siemens company, which is responsible for the maintenance of the Nord Stream turbines, have verified the malfunction. In turn, the Federal Technical Supervision Service of Russia warned that the problem did not guarantee the safe operation of the turbine.

“In this sense, it is necessary to take the corresponding measures and suspend the activities of the Trent 60 turbine in connection with the serious violations that have been found,” the note reads.

According to Gazprom, such oil leaks had been discovered in the past in three other turbines, and their complete elimination “is only possible” in a specialized workshop, citing Siemens.

This week, Gazprom president Alexei Miller said that the repair of the turbines at a specialized plant is impossible due to sanctions imposed by the West.

“Siemens currently has virtually no capacity to regularly assess our turbines. Siemens simply has nowhere to do this job,” said Miller.
