In the US city of Tupelo, Mississippi, a pilot of a small plane intentionally threatened to fly into a department store on Saturday. The department store was evacuated. Finally, after more than five hours in the air, the plane landed in a field near the city, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves. The pilot was immediately arrested.
Videos on social media showed a small plane circling above the city – later the plane turned north.
“No one was injured”
“We are pleased that the situation has been resolved and that no one was injured,” Reeves wrote on Twitter. The police controlled the “situation with the utmost professionalism”. American media reported that the pilot had been arrested.
According to the police, the pilot called the police early Saturday morning and threatened to crash. The department store in Tupelo and a nearby store were subsequently evacuated. City residents were asked to avoid the affected area.
Reeves spoke of a “dangerous situation” that was being closely monitored by police and emergency services. It was initially unclear whether the pilot had permission to fly and why he made the threat.
