Countless evictions – Lobau squatters in Vienna are now becoming nomads

Date:

After a year of occupation, it was over on Monday. The last protest camp in the Begingasse in Vienna has been broken up by the residents themselves and the protest of the Viennese squatters Lobau is still going on.

Only recently was the first and at the same time last anniversary celebrated in the Anfanggasse in Donaustadt. Now, after more than a year of constant occupation, the very last Lobau camp is finally history. The tents have gradually been broken down in recent days.

Rat plague caused excitement
September 5 was set by the Vienna City Gardens (MA 42) as the final ultimatum after tree inspection and maintenance had been unavailable for months. As a result, the safety of park visitors and squatters was no longer guaranteed, according to the office of Climate Council member Jürgen Czernohorszky (SPÖ). A rat infestation also caused a stir.

The Vienna City Gardens said a tree inspector on Monday conducted the first tree checks at the facility, as far as possible. However, an exact overview of the damage has not yet been possible.

Looking for a new place to stay during a protest march
Although the Lobau tunnel has long been canceled and the city street is taking shape, the protesters are still not giving up. A new place to stay was sought in a joint protest march under the motto “Hainburg is everywhere” via Süßenbrunnerstrae and further via Hirschstettnerstraße to the U1 station Kagraner Platz.

Where exactly was unclear at first. In any case, no permanent encounter with the Vienna police has been recorded. No further protests were registered for the facilities managed by the Vienna City Gardens. The squatters have now become protest nomads.
