The Junta de Castilla y León leaves the reopening route to the owners of Garoña

Date:

For his part, Álava’s deputy general Ramiro González emphasized that “there is no chance of it opening” because the facility “is history”.

The Junta de Castilla y León has left in the hands of the owners of the Santa María de Garoña nuclear power plant in Burgos, which was definitively closed in July 2013, the initiative to propose its reopening and viability, which will then have all legal procedures, including the report of the Nuclear Safety Council.

The Council spokesman announced this on Wednesday. Carlos Fernandez Carriedoduring a press conference after the Board of Directors.

On Tuesday, the far-right parliamentary group Vox, which is part of the regional executive, presented a non-legal proposal asking the Spanish government to conduct a feasibility study into the reopening of the Garoña nuclear power plant, which is currently in the decommissioning phase by the government. owner Nuclenor (Iberdrola and Endesa)in which he sees this alternative as “viable” as a “temporary solution”, although he adds that his preference is to install a new nuclear reactor in the same place.

“The owners must decide”insisted that the spokesperson for the board, who clarified that the proposal on energy issues sent by the regional government to the government of Spain “provides continuity to the existing plants”, which would exclude the Garoña plant, which will begin its decommissioning process next year.

Ramiro González: ‘It is not innocent that the extreme right reigns’

For this reason, the council has reiterated that it is not within its competence to decide on an area in which “it is the owners who should make their decisions”, in this case Iberdrola and Endesa, who have so far not contacted the Board of Directors to address this issue, Carriedo acknowledged.

For his part, the deputy general of Álava, Ramiro Gonzalezon Wednesday expressed its absolute rejection of the reopening of the Garoña nuclear power plant, stressing that “there is no possibility of opening it” because the facility “is already history”.

lava’s general deputy recalled that Garoña was a first-generation factory “absolutely outdated”with a technology that assumes an “unacceptable risk” and located in an “inconvenient” location due to its proximity to densely populated urban centers such as Vitoria-Gasteiz and Bilbao.

He has pointed out that the reopening was arranged years ago and believes that Vox’s proposal shows that “it is not innocent that the far right reigns.”
