A cargo plane broke in two after an emergency landing at the international airport in Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose. The machine of the DHL parcel service Boeing 757 had hydraulic problems, local fire chief Héctor Chaves announced on the spot at Juan Santamaría airport. The pilot and co-pilot, the only people on board, were uninjured.
After landing, videos showed the plane descended from the runway, then made a right turn, stirred up dust and came to rest in a depression next to the runway with a fracture near the tail.
The fire brigade used foam to prevent fires.
According to a report in the newspaper “La Nación”, the machine had taken off from the same airport in the direction of Guatemala City, but had to turn back. Accordingly, the pilot had reported an airborne emergency.
Operations at the airport were interrupted for several hours.
