“Migration pressure” – Hungary: Orban praised new border guard regiment

Date:

Hungary has created a new entity to protect its borders. Prime Minister Viktor Orban ceremonially swore in the first 523 border guards in Budapest on Friday. The Grenzjäger Regiment is expected to grow to thousands of members in the coming years.

In his speech, Orban recalled the “growing migratory pressure” that represents “a threat to civilization” and the parallel increasing “danger of terrorism”. He underlined the importance of the “border fighters” regiment for the protection of the security of the country and at the same time of the whole of Europe. The national-conservative head of government again criticized the EU’s sanctions policy against Russia and the EU authorities in Brussels, from whom no help was expected. Orban praised the “courage” of the jurors as the basis for the country’s security.

More than 1,500 people had registered, according to the state police headquarters. About 500 of them have already started the four-week training. The government had decided in July to create “border fighter” units because of growing illegal migration. Orban had previously said 2,000 to 4,000 border guards would be needed to protect Hungary’s borders. The unit is considered the quasi-successor of the former independent Hungarian border security authority (Hatarörseg), which was disbanded at the turn of the year 2007/08 and incorporated into the police force.

In this regard, Orban explained that so far both the police and the military have defended the borders “against the high waves”. But now, not least because of the war in Ukraine, they are needed elsewhere. The head of government stressed: “Behind the border guards goes the whole country, every Hungarian family, every child, every city and every village.”
