Within days, Ukrainian troops recaptured huge swaths of territory from the Russians. The general staff in Kiev spoke on Sunday about more than 3,000 square kilometers. Over the course of Sunday, Russian troops withdrew from other border towns. According to the latest reports, the Russian occupiers are now also withdrawing from parts of the southern region of Kherson.
In some places, the occupiers had already left their positions there, the Ukrainian General Staff announced on Sunday evening. In the city of Nowa Kachowka, Russian soldiers had cleared a hospital to hide in, the general staff in Kiev said. However, as is so often the case, this information could not be independently verified.
Under pressure from Ukrainian counter-offensives, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Saturday that it was withdrawing its own troops from Kharkov, more than six months after the war started. This news was received with euphoria in Kiev – and the willingness to take back other occupied territories was confirmed.
Large parts of the southern region of Kherson have been under Russian control since the spring. Since then, there have been repeated protests and attacks against the occupation administrations deployed by Russia, especially in the eponymous regional capital Kherson.
