In Switzerland, a fundamental decision has been taken for a nuclear waste storage facility. The repository is being built in the Nördlich Lägern area in the cantons of Zurich and Aargau in the immediate vicinity of the German border and about 100 kilometers from the Austrian border, the Federal Office for Energy (SFOE) announced on Monday. The entrance must be in the municipality of Stadel.
The National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra), which is responsible for the selection of the disposal location, had already announced its advice on Saturday evening. According to Nagra, Nördlich Lägern offers the best geological barrier effect, explains the SFOE.
Operation from 2050?
Nagra has been researching suitable locations for a repository since 2008 and has shortlisted three locations since 2018. The necessary construction documents must be prepared and submitted by the end of 2024. The SFOE expects approval around the year 2030 and the repository could then be commissioned from 2050.
However, the government and parliament have yet to approve the project – and a decision could then be held in a referendum, so that ultimately Swiss voters can have the last word.
