After severe storms in the central Italian Adriatic province of Ancona, the search for three missing persons will continue on Saturday. Authorities said ten dead, at least 50 injured and 150 people evacuated.
Emergency services are currently looking for an eight-year-old boy, a 56-year-old woman and a man from the municipality of Arcevia. The child is said to be near the port city of Ancona. “The Nevola stream flooded our area, Mattia was driving home with his mother in the car when a wave of water came at them. The mother got out of the car and tried to save herself while holding her son’s hand, but they were both swept away by the water and mud. We found the mother in a mess, but there was no trace of the child,” said Castelleone di Suasa mayor Carlo Manfredi.
Firefighters and Civil Defense in Action
During the night of Saturday, firefighters, including from other Italian regions, civil defense and other rescue workers were constantly on hand to help the evacuees and the injured. Water supplies to private households and businesses, which had been interrupted in several areas since Friday, have partially recovered.
Many houses were destroyed by water and mud. Streets in Ancona and Pesaro Urbino provinces were flooded Friday night and numerous cars washed away. As reported, 400 millimeters of rain fell within two hours, the same as normal in six months. In several districts of Ancona, electricity and telephones went out and schools remained closed.
A video from the fire department showed emergency services in the city of Senigallia with water up to their waist. They searched the city for people in need with a dinghy. The fire brigade has already registered a total of 400 calls. She saved people from trees or roofs, among other things. However, their work was hampered by fallen trees and landslides. The same goes for rescue.
Authorities asked residents of the Misa River communities to either leave their homes or move to higher floors. Prime Minister Mario Draghi visited the worst-affected communities on Friday afternoon and met Fabrizio Curcio, head of civil defense.
