Doña Letizia can’t attend because she has to catch a flight to New York, but Doña Sofía is going
The surprising joint photo of the king and queen of Spain together with the emeritus at Isabel II’s funeral is not repeated. Although Felipe VI and Letizia shared a seat with Don Juan Carlos and Doña Sofía at the funeral mass at Westminster Abbey, they will not coincide at Windsor Castle this afternoon.
King Carlos III has invited the royal houses attending the funeral to attend the religious ceremony preceding Elizabeth II’s funeral. King Felipe VI has accepted the invitation, but Doña Letizia will not be able to join them because she has to take a flight to New York this afternoon to participate in a series of pledges on the occasion of the UN General Assembly. Queen Sofia, for her part, will also be attending the Windsor event, but Don Juan Carlos “has declined the invitation,” they explained from Zarzuela.
The convoy carrying the remains of Elizabeth II will arrive at Windsor Castle at 3:06 PM (one hour later in Spain) where a religious service will take place at 4:00 PM in the Chapel of St. George, led by the Dean of Windsor, in presence of about 800 people. Among them will be the King and Queen of Spain, along with Doña Sofia. She is in London with Juan Carlos after receiving a personal invitation to the funeral, while Felipe VI was present as a representative of Spain.
The funeral will take place at 7:30 PM, but it will already be a private ceremony for the family. Elizabeth II’s remains will rest alongside those of her husband, Prince Philip, who died in April 2021 and was initially buried in a temporary grave awaiting the Queen’s death.
