Criminal proceedings will soon begin in the largest fraud case in German post-war history against former Wirecard chief executive Markus Braun. This was announced by the Supreme Court of the Munich District Court on Wednesday. The Austrian is accused of commercial gang fraud with accomplices.
The Munich I Regional Court has therefore allowed the Munich prosecutor’s office to indict Braun and two other former Wirecard executives without change. The main allegation against the businessmen is commercial gang fraud.
Damage of more than 3 billion euros
Braun has been in prison for more than two years. According to the indictment, he and his accomplices have falsified Wirecard’s balance sheets since 2015 and damaged lending banks a total of €3.1 billion – of which €1.7 billion in loans and another 1.4 billion in bonds.
In June 2020, the Wirecard Group collapsed. The Austrian ex-CEO has protested his innocence in the past and dismissed the allegations.
