The US space agency NASA has encountered another leak during a tank test for its unmanned lunar mission “Artemis”. It’s the same type of liquid hydrogen tank leak that prevented the mission from launching on Sept. 3. The test went ahead on Wednesday.
It is unclear whether the launch plan, which is aimed at another launch attempt on September 27, can be sustained. The authorities are still missing further approvals before this date. Another window foresees a start between October 17 and 31.
About three weeks ago, two attempts to launch the unmanned rocket failed – partly due to a leaking fuel hose.
The missile system was then initially returned to the hangar in the Cape Canaveral spaceport in the US state of Florida. Problems had also arisen in previous “Artemis” tests, which ultimately resulted in a significant delay in the project.
Named after the Greek goddess of the moon, the program should actually land American astronauts back on the moon by 2024.
