New Study Shows: – Stereotypes as a barrier to adoption from shelters

Date:

Only every third person who wants to take an animal from the animal shelter actually implements this plan. According to the study, errors are the cause of this low percentage.

What stops people from adopting animals from shelters? The operator of the largest such facility in Austria, Tierschutz Austria from Vösendorf in the Mödling district, and food and pet food producer Mars wanted to find out with a new study. Because two-thirds of all interested people leave the animal shelter without a new supervisor. Striking: This value is even higher in dogs.

Problematic history?
Errors and misconceptions are to blame for this, according to the research. So many believe that every shelter dog has a problematic history. “But that’s not true, our protégés come to us for various reasons,” emphasizes Jonas von Einem of Tierschutz Austria. The assumption that only old dogs wait in the house for a new owner was often mentioned. “But we have dogs of all ages, from puppies to seniors. We also have pedigree dogs,” von Einem clarifies another misconception.

“Dogs learn lifelong”
Another concern is the difficult training of shelter dogs. “Dogs also learn throughout their lives. We even offer private lessons,” says von Einem.
