The US has warned Russia, both publicly and privately, that the consequences of using nuclear weapons would be “catastrophic”. Russian President Vladimir Putin indirectly threatened the use of nuclear weapons when he announced the partial mobilization of reservists on Wednesday. Russia will use all “available means” to protect its territory, this is “no bluff”.
“Those who try to blackmail us with nuclear weapons should know that the tide could turn in their direction,” Putin said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made it clear that he takes the Russian president’s nuclear threats seriously (see video above).
US Secretary of State: ‘Must stop talking’
“We have told the Russians very clearly, both publicly and privately, to stop talking about nuclear weapons,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken responded to the threat in an interview with CBS News’ 60 Minutes that aired Sunday.
Blinken said in the TV interview on the sidelines of the general UN debate in New York that it was “very important that Moscow hears from us and is told that the consequences would be dire. And we made that very clear”. said Blinken. Any use of nuclear weapons “would obviously have catastrophic consequences for the country that uses them, but also for many others”.
Video: Biden Condemns Vladimir Putin’s ‘Reckless’ Nuclear Threats
Jake Sullivan, national security adviser to US President Joe Biden, said recently in another interview that the US had warned Russia “at a very high level” about the “catastrophic consequences” of the use of nuclear weapons. The United States and its allies would “respond decisively,” Sullivan said. “We made it clear what that would mean.”
