A week and a half after the start of the Oktoberfest, the corona figures in Munich are rising faster and faster. On a weekly basis, the seven-day incidence rose nearly 77 percent to 424.9. That is significantly more than the Bavaria-wide increase of 43.1 percent or the German increase of 29.4 percent. The incidence is the number of new infections registered per 100,000 people within seven days.
Since health authorities report virtually no new cases to the Robert Koch Institute over the weekend, which it can include in the morning numbers, Tuesday is usually the first day of the week when incidences increase significantly.
A connection between the increase and the Oktoberfest – which will take place for the first time in 2022 after a long Corona break (see video above) – can hardly be proven at the moment, but it is clear: other folk festivals were often there a week and a half after the start showed a significant increase in incidences.
These were often increased for a good week. Experts had also predicted a Wiesn wave in the run-up to Oktoberfest.

In the meantime, however, the incidence figures have lost some significance. Experts have long assumed that there will be a large number of corona cases that are not registered by the RKI – especially because not all infected people have a PCR test. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations and transmission problems can bias individual daily values.
Oktoberfest wastewater is being tested for Corona
Scientists from Munich are examining the wastewater daily for components of the corona virus during the festival. There is currently a virus concentration there that is comparable to that in the urban area, according to Andreas Wieser of the Department of Infection and Tropical Medicine at the LMU Klinikum München.
“We can already see that a lot is happening there,” says Wieser. However, it is not yet clear from the wastewater whether a Wiesngolf is on the way.
