“Are not neutral” – Serbia does not want to recognize Ukraine referendums

Date:

Serbia is on a difficult course: on the one hand, it depends on Russian gas and wants to be close to the Kremlin, on the other hand, the government in Belgrade is also striving to join the EU. In recent days there have been several reprimands from Brussels: you can only seriously negotiate accession if Serbia does not deepen its relations with Russia. Prime Minister Ana Brnabic has now emphasized that her government will not recognize the results of the mock referendums in eastern Ukraine.

“We have taken a clear position, joined UN sanctions and EU statements and condemned the aggression,” Brnabic said in Tokyo on Wednesday, according to media reports in Belgrade. However, the head of government continued to exclude participation in the EU’s sanctions. “We have good and valid reasons for that,” she said. After meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Serbian prime ministerial candidate spoke about Belgrade’s “principled and clear position”.

A few days ago, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belgrade said that recognizing the referendums in Donbass would be “completely contrary to Serbian state and national interests”. Serbia “On the basis of international law”, the outcome of the referendums in the “People’s Republics” of Luhansk and Donetsk, as well as in the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions cannot be accepted. The attitude from Serbia on this issue is understandable given the issue of Kovoso, whose independence is not accepted by Belgrade.

Whirl around new deal with Russia
An agreement on bilateral cooperation for the next two years, which Serbian Foreign Minister Nikola Selakovic signed in New York with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov, sparked a lot of attention and negative international reactions this weekend.
