This Saturday comes into effect VAT reduction from 21% to 5% in the natural gas bill approved by the Spanish government to protect consumers in a context marked by the rise in energy prices in Europe following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The measure, which will be in effect from next Saturday until the end of the year, but can be extended beyond that date, represents a combined saving of 210 million euros for families and businesses, according to the Spanish Executive, and between five and ten euros per month, depending on consumption, according to the consumer association Facua.
The reduction will also apply to all deliveries of natural gas destined for the boilers of neighboring communities which, due to the volumes they process, cannot benefit from the regulated tariff (TUR), the increase of which is limited by the government to 5% quarterly, just like the purchase of chips, pellets and firewood.
As for the neighboring communities, the Spanish government has been working for some time to provide a solution to the owners’ communities with a centralized gas boiler, probably through “a specific solution for this type of consumption”, so that, while the gas is so high, they can also have a system to control the energy price.
This new measure is added to the already applicable reductions in taxes on the electricity bill, which, according to the College, has reduced electricity taxes to 80%.
Since June last year, the electricity bill has a VAT rate of 5%, after the government will first reduce it from 21% to 10%, and then to the current rate, which does not exist in its regulations, but allowed by a recent European guide line.
In addition, there are also in effect both the reduction of the special tax on electricity to 0.5%, such as the suspension of the tax on electricity generation, measures that, together with the reduction in VAT, will cost the state 1,800 million each quarter, according to the Spanish government.
Likewise, since June 15, the so-called “Iberian Mechanism”which limits the price of natural gas for electricity generation and makes it possible to control the price of electricity on the wholesale market.
