According to Iranian state media, 19 people have been killed in fighting in southeastern Iran. A Revolutionary Guard colonel was among the dead in Sistan-Baluchestan province, regional governor Hossein Chiabani told a state broadcaster on Friday. 20 other people were injured.
Meanwhile, the Iranian secret service arrested nine foreigners. The detainees came from Germany, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland and Sweden, a statement said Friday evening. They would have either directly participated in the systemic protests or acted in the background. The secret service gave no further details about the arrested Europeans.
Death of young woman in police brutality causes a stir
The demonstrations were triggered by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The moral police had her arrested for her alleged “un-Islamic outfit”. What exactly happened to Amini after that is unclear. The woman had fallen into a coma and died in a hospital on September 16. Critics accuse the morality police of using force. Police strongly deny the charges. Since the young woman’s death, thousands of people across the country have demonstrated against the repressive course of the government and security forces, as well as against the Islamic system.
