Police found nearly 1,150 liters of fuel in the cargo hold of a small truck. The driver himself had “refueled” more than one per mille. However, in Oberwart (Burgenland) the Styrian journey came to an end: officials stopped him and the car was secured.
Fuel is now even more expensive. To avoid the imminent price hike, a businessman from Styria resorted to drastic measures. He drove a small truck to Hungary to stock up on cheap fuel. A 1000 liter tank and a number of 25 and 50 liter containers had been found in the cargo area.
Drunk with joy
The joy about illegal savings was apparently so great that the 61-year-old drank too much when he was thirsty. On the way home, other road users noticed his idiosyncratic driving style. The police were warned.
Shortly afterwards, a patrol stopped the suspected driver at a roundabout on the B63a in Oberwart. The breathalyzer revealed: the 61-year-old dealer from the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district had more than one per mille in his blood! His driver’s license was immediately confiscated.
police officers surprised
The police officers were also surprised when they checked the Styrian small truck. In the cargo hold, they found a total of almost 1,150 liters of diesel in the extra tank that had been transported and in all containers. It is not yet clear where the fuel comes from.
The Oberwart district administration immediately ordered the seizure of the small truck and the smuggled fuel. The city fire brigade has taken the vehicle into custody at the municipal construction site. Investigators are conducting further investigations to clarify the background to this thorny case.
