What makes the “Steirerkrone” special? Editor-in-chief Oliver Pokorny on the virtue of courage on the occasion of the 50th anniversary. And he makes a promise, “No one will break our heart.”
Birthdays are welcome opportunities to question yourself outside of the celebrations. What have we achieved at the “Steirerkrone” in the past 50 years? What benefit have we donated? Who are we committed to?
Discover grievances, name injustice
In summary, we’ve done our best to provide our readers with topics that have moved the country over the past 18,250 days. But what moves? The mere reporting of events is basic journalistic material, but is increasingly receding into the background. Increasingly important, we make a difference by exposing grievances, naming injustices, and beating those in power closer to themselves than to those they should serve.
The benefit we create: correcting social and political imbalances that affect us all. That is why we fight so hard for, for example, people who are being wronged, or for nature and environmental protection.
The glue should last forever
In this fight, we are sometimes accused of being overly aggressive. We are not like that. You have to shout loudly to be heard. “The ‘Krone’ is a critical guardian of the powerful, in the interest of our readers we warn and protest.” We have pasted this quote from our founder Hans Dichand in large letters on the glass walls of our editorial office in Graz. We walk past it several times a day at work. The glue must last forever, we must never lose focus on this mission.
It takes courage
When we audit politicians and decision-makers for the benefit of our readers, those in power often respond with threats and interventions against the editors. Some even want to scare us. A guardianship role therefore requires above all courage. It takes courage to overcome your adversary, fear. Courage is the willingness to do what you think is right in the face of expected drawbacks. Courageous: That is probably the most important solidarity feature of the editors of the “Steirerkrone”.
We are not tied to any circle of power, we are only committed to our readers. No one will break our courage. Not even in the next 50 years.
