Independently of each other, there were two serious train accidents in Vienna on Monday. Two pedestrians overlooked approaching trains and were caught on the tracks. Both men were seriously injured.
On Monday morning, one of the victims wanted to cross the freight train line in Leopoldstadt. Despite the red traffic light and the closed half barrier, the 41-year-old took to the track. He was hit by a freight train, which fortunately was not moving fast. According to the Vienna professional rescue service, the man suffered bruises on his upper body, a head injury and a fracture to his face. He was taken to hospital after receiving emergency medical attention. Due to the serious injuries, an alcohol test could not be performed initially.
Blessing in disguise
The next accident happened in the evening. A 43-year-old tripped over the platform at Rennweg station, tripped and was hit by an oncoming train. Fortunately, he did not end up under the oncoming express train.
The victim of the accident was taken to hospital with a broken upper arm and abrasions. In consultation with the ÖBB emergency coordinator, the platform was closed for about an hour. However, train traffic could continue via the other track.
