Tragic accident in faraway Pakistan: A 28-year-old from Ausserfern in Tyrol died on Thursday while climbing under an ice avalanche. The young man was traveling with a Pakistani guide who survived the alpine tragedy with serious injuries.
The accident is said to have taken place in northern Pakistan on Thursday. As the “Krone” learned from a reliable source, the Ausserferner from the Reutte area was ice climbing in the Karakorum Mountains in the South Asian country. The accident happened in the vicinity of the base camp at about 4700 meters altitude. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has since confirmed the accident.
Caught in an ice avalanche
In the course of the climb, an ice avalanche that hit the 28-year-old probably broke loose for unknown reasons. The Tyrolean suffered fatal injuries. The Pakistani guide survived the accident seriously injured. Apparently, according to local media reports, a 25-year-old Austrian was also on the tour. She also suffered serious injuries. The two survivors were flown by helicopter from the base camp to a hospital.
For now, the Foreign Ministry had no evidence of an Austrian companion of the deceased alpinist, a spokeswoman said. The man’s body has been recovered and next of kin have already been notified. The Austrian embassy in Islamabad is in contact with authorities and the military to organize the return of the dead man to his home country.
