The US military has killed several senior Islamic State (IS) militants in an airborne operation and airstrike in northern Syria. Among them was a deputy IS leader, the US central command said Friday evening. The strike against IS members was therefore successful in two different operations on Thursday.
On Thursday morning, US units killed IS commander Rakkan Wahid al-Shammri during an airborne operation in Muluk Sarai, about 20 kilometers south of the town of Qamishli in the largely Kurdish-controlled province of Al-Hasakah in northern Syria. According to the Central Command of the United States Armed Forces (CENTCOM), he was responsible for supplying weapons and transporting militiamen across the Syrian-Turkish border. According to an eyewitness, three American helicopters were involved in the operation. Another IS member was killed and two others arrested during the operation.
US agency: no civilian casualties
There was an airstrike on an unspecified location near Qamishli on Thursday evening at 6:32 p.m. local time. One of the top five leaders of IS in Syria, Abu Hashim al-Umawi aka Abu Ala, and Abu Muad al-Qahtani, who is responsible for prisoner affairs, were killed. No civilians were injured in the operation, as CENTCOM added in a press release.
The US forces are supporting the fight against the IS militia, which is still active in Syria, in the areas controlled by the Kurdish militia YPG and its allies in northern Syria.
