His willingness to help proved fatal for a 40-year-old from Feldkirchner and his Mercedes on Saturday. A friend ran out of gas and wanted to help him.
He immediately filled a jerry can with petrol, put it in his car and made his way to the Ortisei fire station, where his friend was waiting with his moped. “While driving, the bus overturned in the car. Some fuel was spilled,” said the police. “After refueling the moped, the man from Feldkirch lit a cigarette and went back to his car.”
But meanwhile, the car was full of gas fumes and when he opened the door his cigarette lit. A jet of flame shot from the car, searing the right side of his face and hair. The Mercedes itself was completely engulfed within seconds.
Police officer alerted the fire brigade
A police officer from Feldkirch, passing by in his spare time, witnessed the incident and ran straight to the fire station and activated the siren. “The officer, the 40-year-old and the neighbors who came to the rescue tried to bring the flames under control with three fire extinguishers,” police said.
Unfortunately, they did not make it, but the alarmed volunteer fire brigade in St. Ulrich, together with the fire brigade of Feldkirchen, were immediately on the spot and extinguished the fire.
The man from Feldkirch was then taken to the Klagenfurt clinic by a friend for outpatient treatment.
