Hours after a tiger killed a woman and her eight-year-old child, the infamous animal known as the Champaran man-eater was shot dead by Indian police. The big cat is said to have mauled nine people in just under six months.
According to the Hindustan Times, 200 people, including eight snipers, were involved in the hunt. The search for the animal, which was eventually killed with three shots, took 27 days. According to an executive branch spokesperson, there were also three elephant police patrols.
“The Tiger Wasn’t Afraid”
The three-year-old tiger was eventually tracked down in a sugarcane field near a village. The animal may not have been shy of humans — even just before being shot, it made eye contact with its hunters, officials said. “The tiger was not afraid at all because it did not try to run away when it was surrounded from all sides by our teams in the sugar cane field,” said the chief game warden of the Indian state of Bihar.
“Instead, he dared to confront the men with their weapons, despite being surrounded by trained elephants and a large number of officers from the Forest Service, Police and District Administration,” the official told the Times of India.
Previously, experts conducted several operations to capture the tiger, but in vain. As a result, the big cat was finally released to shoot. The killing of the tiger brought relief and joy to the villagers. Among his nine victims were some children.
