Had to go to court – British vegan allowed mice to live in her home

Date:

A British vegan (73) now has to pay a fine for failing to take action against a mouse infestation in her home for ethical reasons. Despite complaints from neighbors, she treated and fed the mice in her row house as pets, Essex Borough Council Tendring said. A court in the city of Colchester fined her £1,500.

The 73-year-old had previously admitted the allegations. The court said it respected the woman’s opinion, but other people considered mice to be pests. The effects of the plague on the neighbors would not have allowed passivity. Some had left because of the stench, things were damaged.

The woman had indicated that the animals would not bother the neighbors because she was taking care of them. The court saw it differently. It also fined the woman £1,500 and awarded the council £2,395 for housing costs incurred. Neighborhood workers had offered help on several visits by urging the 73-year-old to stop feeding the birds, clearing her overgrown yard and asking for pest control.
