A Tyrolean motorist (41) was killed on Thursday in a rear-end collision on the A12 near Langkampfen. In recent years there have been a number of fatal rear-end collisions in traffic jams at border controls.
The rescue teams were presented with a terrible picture on Friday morning: the victim was trapped in the totally destroyed car, which literally got stuck under the trailer. “When we arrived at the accident site, we had to free the deceased from the wreckage with rescue scissors,” said Armin Ungericht, commander of the Wörgl city fire brigade.
Bulgarians drove trucks
The accident happened at 8 am in the direction of Kufstein shortly after the Kirchbichl exit at kilometer 10.49. According to police, a 44-year-old Bulgarian truck driver stopped his heavy vehicle at the end of a traffic jam and turned on the hazard warning lights. The 41-year-old motorist who was driving behind the Bulgarian may have overlooked the stationary truck and crashed into the back of the truck. Unfortunately, all the help came too late for the 41-year-old Tyrolean, a family father from the Unterland. According to information from the Wiesing motorway police, this was the first fatal rear-end collision this year on the section of the motorway between Wattens and Kufstein.
fatalities in similar accidents
For fire chief Armin Ungericht, such operations after devastating rear-end collisions are nothing new. “I believe that in the years since the start of the pandemic or the start of border controls, we have had more than five deaths in similar backlog accidents,” the commander said.
The Wörgl city fire brigade was on duty Friday with a total of four vehicles and 25 Florianis – which was extremely demanding psychologically. “Very experienced people are needed who can actually handle the great psychological load. We are all volunteers. But we have comrades like that,” said Operations Manager Ungericht.
The truck driver was not injured and the Inntalautobahn had to be completely closed at 09:00 in the accident area towards Kufstein. As a result, it was only drivable in one lane until about 10 a.m.
