Fraud investigators from the State Criminal Investigation Service in Upper Austria have managed to catch a Georgian (20) who is a member of an international gang of scammers. As a fake police officer, the suspect wanted to collect the bank balances of a woman from Linz (80), but the victim raised the alarm.
“Such success is always a great motivation for my employees,” says Gerald Sakoparnig, principal investigator of the LKA Upper Austria. Because it’s not often that members of a “cousin trick” gang can get caught. “These perpetrators are extremely suspicious and will immediately stop a coup if there is the slightest doubt that it will succeed,” said the detective.
“Inspector Weber” called the retiree
In the present case, an 80-year-old woman from Linz was called by an “Inspector Weber” at 11 p.m. on Thursday evening. “He explained to her that there had been a number of burglaries in the area – and that a list had been obtained that also had her name on it.”

However, when the retiree assured the caller that she had no assets in the house, but in the bank, the “investigator” claimed that all bank employees were collaborating with the perpetrators. He asked the woman to withdraw all the money and turn it into gold at the same time. “She can’t tell anyone. A colleague picked up the gold and then kept it safe with the police.” The victim did not fall for the scam but alerted the real police, who managed to get hold of a Georgian man (20) when he called.
