Ten people were injured in a basement fire in Vienna-Ottakring on Friday evening. Including six children and four adults. They were taken to hospital with suspected smoke inhalation.
The residents of the house were brought outside with escape filter masks, the professional fire brigade reported in a broadcast on Saturday. The fire was extinguished with breathing apparatus and the operation lasted about three hours.
Residents alert emergency services
The fire broke out around 8 p.m. in the basement of a residential building on Thaliastrasse. A resident called the fire brigade. When emergency services arrived, the stairwell was already thick with smoke. A extinguishing line was laid in the basement while wearing respiratory protection, at the same time other respiratory protection teams checked the stairs and brought the residents outside.
Power was out
Because the power had also failed, temporary emergency lighting was installed in the stairwell with battery lighting, fire department spokesman Christian Feiler reports. The fire was quickly extinguished and the smoke was extracted from the building with two powerful fans. For safety reasons, the gas pipeline was also blocked because it was near the seat of the fire.
Cause of fire still unclear
16 people were taken care of by the professional rescue service. Six children between the ages of three and 11 and the adults were taken to hospital after emergency medical care, rescue spokesman Andreas Huber reported. First, the cause of the fire must be determined.
