Warmest year ever recorded in Italy this year

Date:

This year was the warmest year in Italy since the measurements began in 1800. The temperature increase was almost one degree Celsius higher than the average over the 1990-2020 period, said expert Bernardo Gozzini, based on data from the scientific institute Consiglio Nazionale. delle Ricerche (CNR).

The strongest increase occurred in neighboring Italy at maximum temperatures, which were 1.2 degrees Celsius higher than the average of the past 30 years. In terms of minimum temperatures, the year 2022 to September ranks third among the warmest years. The year 2018 was in first place with a difference of 0.67 degrees.

In Europe, 2022 ranks third among the warmest years since 1800, while it ranks fifth globally. “Italy is in a sense at the center of this climate change, so much so that there is a ‘tropicalization’ of the climate,” Gozzini said through Italy’s ANSA news agency.

Northern Italy hit by drought
Another sensitive point is the drought, which has mainly affected northern Italy this year. In central and southern Italy, on the other hand, the months of August and September were mainly rainy.

Rainfall in these regions has been two to three times the average over the past 30 years, Gozzini reported. The regions of Umbria, Marche and Tuscany were particularly hard hit by the rain.
