According to him, Sidney de Carvalho Mesquita has a “rare talent”: the Brazilian can protrude almost two centimeters from the eye sockets – he holds the official world record in the Guinness World Records. He discovered his abilities as a child and is very proud of that. In interviews, he revealed whether this feat is harmful and how long he can sustain it.
Mesquita can protrude his eyes exactly 18.2 millimeters. When the Brazilian shows his talent, it’s hard to imagine that he doesn’t feel pain. But the record holder explains that it only becomes uncomfortable if he shows the trick for too long. He can do this for 20 to 30 seconds – but when he does his trick, he gets a burning sensation. No wonder: the exposed eyeballs are exposed to the air without protection. That’s why he always uses eye drops before and after so that his eyes don’t dry out too much.
Brazilian can’t see anything for a few seconds
When he was a child, his parents worried that there might be a disease behind Mesquita’s special talent. But an ophthalmologist gave it all clear: this trait is innate to him – he doesn’t have to train specifically for it. Eng: When he performs his trick, he sees nothing for a few seconds. His eyes need a certain amount of time before they can focus again in the new position.
However, bulging eyes can also be due to medical conditions, researchers found in a 2012 study. For example, a thyroid disorder, eye socket infection or injury can cause bulging eyes.
