The governments of Spain, France and Portugal have agreed to build a third energy pipeline between the Iberian Peninsula and France. It is intended for green hydrogen, but will also transport gas during a transition period.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said this on Thursday. The European energy market needs gas because of the “blackmail” of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In principle, the new pipeline between Barcelona (Spain) and Marseille (France) is intended for green hydrogen. That is why the project is called “Green Energy Corridor”.
French President Emmanuel Macron and Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa confirmed the plan. Macron said the details will be worked out by the three in the coming weeks. It is not only an important issue of European solidarity, but also a project to continue the climate and energy transition. A few hours before the start of the EU summit, the three presidents agreed on the “Green Energy Corridor”. Macron hopes for EU funds to finance the new pipeline.
Midcat pipeline rejected
The French government previously rejected the so-called Midcat pipeline, which, among others, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had advocated. This should have led from Barcelona over the Pyrenees to Barbaira in southern France. In Spain, the tube is already ready to 106 kilometers south of the border, in France about 120 kilometers are still missing. The project was canceled in 2017 due to a lack of profitability and Macron later declined to proceed.
