Before All Saints – Retiree drove a car over several tombstones

Date:

Shock just before All Saints’ Day: A retired man drove his car through the cemetery in Schattendorf in Burgenland and damaged several graves.

How the elderly man managed to drive down the two tombstones, which weighed hundreds of kilograms, in his SUV and subsequently damaged other graves, has not yet been fully elucidated.

No gate for cemetery
What is certain is that the pensioner has used the fact that there is no longer a gate to the Schattendorf cemetery to drive his car along the two and a half meters wide aisle of the resting place. Apparently he wanted to use the wagon to transport fresh soil and flowers to a grave in preparation for All Saints’ Day.

Mix up pedals?
It is believed that when he tried to dodge the path lights on the left, he went too far to the right or perhaps mixed up the accelerator and brake pedals. About half a dozen graves were damaged.

While shocked visitors to the cemetery called the police, the elderly man is said to have calmly passed over his grave, scattering the fresh soil there and planting the new flowers. Then he would have had to leave the site again by car.

Incident ends up with the insurance company
The case is now an insurance case. But that offers little comfort to the families of the damaged graves. Until the expert arrives, the overturned tombstones are not moved.

In addition, it is said that the damage will probably not be able to be repaired before All Saints’ Day. By the way: apparently there is no driving ban in the cemetery. But according to cemetery visitors, it is more than unusual to drive through the cemetery by car.
