A motion of censure tabled by the left against the French government was rejected this Monday by failing to gather the necessary votesdespite the announcement by far-right Marine Le Pen that her group supported her.

Total, 239 delegates They supported that motion, far from the 289 needed to topple the executive of the Prime Minister, Élisabeth Borne, who would have had to resign in that case.

The French delegates must now speak out on the second motion of censurepresented this time by Le Pen’s group, which still has fewer options to move forward, as it does not get the support of the left.

Neither motion had the support of other groups, leaving them behind very far from those 289 compelling votes. The left has a total of 151 seats and the far right another 89 of the total 577 seats in the National Assembly, so they needed the support of the moderate conservatives to move them forward.

The motions of censure were submitted at the end of last week, after Borne had opted for approve the 2023 budgets through a constitutional mechanismArticle 49.3, which prevents debate in the National Assembly.

In return, the prime minister opened the door to table censure motions that, if successful, would have ousted her government.

The president, Emmanuel Macron, who does not have an absolute majority in the chambers, has threatened to… call for parliamentary elections if there is a motion of censure.
