Activists call for mass mobilizations after the end of mourning for Mahsa Amini .’s death
Police repression is not stopping protests in Iran and authorities have taken the first major legal action since the mobilizations began more than a month ago. 516 people will be tried for their active role in the most serious disturbances the Islamic republic has endured since 2019. Officials say 315 of those arrested are from Tehran, 201 from the rest of the provinces, and four of them have been charged with ‘war against God’, a crime punishable by death. “These people will be punished,” said the head of Iran’s justice system, Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejei. This is one of the first official data known since the Islamic regime has so far failed to provide figures on deaths or prisoners.
The Islamic Republic leadership accuses the United States and Israel of being behind protests that have taken over high schools and universities in recent days. It has been 40 days since the death of Mahsa Amini and her family has come under strong pressure not to hold a ceremony on this day when mourning ends, according to Iranian custom, the ‘Iranwire’ portal. On social networks, activists are calling for protests to mark the end of the duel.
Protests broke out after the death of the young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini at the hands of the vice squad on September 16. He was arrested on the streets of Tehran for not wearing the veil properly and he did not leave the police station alive. Since then, mobilizations have been registered in all provinces of the country and it is women who lead them to the cry of ‘woman, life and freedom’, a slogan that transcends borders, as can be seen in the marches through cities around the world. Protesting in the Islamic Republic is risking your life and according to data from non-governmental organizations, more than 200 protesters have lost their lives at the hands of the security forces.
