The 57-year-old Austrian living in Croatia, who had not been convicted of the murder of his three children over the summer, committed suicide in prison on Tuesday. Harald Kopitz was given the maximum sentence of 50 years in prison in early June.
The information was confirmed by the Croatian Ministry of Justice to the daily newspaper “Jutarnji List”. The Justice Ministry ordered an extraordinary inspection at Lepoglava prison to clarify the circumstances, it said.
The Viennese was sentenced to a maximum sentence of 50 years by the regional court in Zagreb in June. The suspect sedated his three children — seven-year-old twins, boy and girl, and a four-year-old son — with a psychotropic cocktail and then strangled them. Then he tries to take his own life with antihypertensive drugs.

Kopitz may have been suffering from depression and recently found himself in financial difficulties. According to an expert, the Viennese was healthy at the time of the crime. At trial, the defendant pleaded guilty.
