“Don’t change the system” – Greta won’t come to Egypt’s climate conference

Date:

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg says she will not attend the 27th UN Climate Change Conference (COP27) in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, in November. “I’m not going to COP27 for many reasons, but the space for civil society is extremely limited this year,” she said during a Q&A on Sunday at the launch of her latest book in London.

In the online service Twitter, she had previously expressed her solidarity with ‘political prisoners’ in Egypt. The COP conferences are largely used as an opportunity for those in positions of power to attract attention, Thunberg said. “Many different types of greenwashing” would be used.

“Not intended to change the system”
The climate summits are “not really meant to change the whole system,” but instead encourage gradual progress, she said. “The COPs don’t really work as they are unless we use them as an opportunity to mobilize.”

100 contributions from different experts
The 19-year-old’s climate book, released Thursday, features about 100 contributions from various experts, including economist Thomas Piketty, head of the World Health Organization Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and author Naomi Klein.

The 27th World Climate Conference (COP27) will take place from November 6-18 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. The focus is on more support from the rich countries that are responsible for a large part of the climate-damaging CO2 emissions to poorer countries.
