More than 80,000 migrants have been detained since the beginning of May, when the campaign was launched with a focus on controls on people smuggling and asylum abuse. That is more than twice as many as in the previous year: in 2021 there were still about 40,000 seizures. The current situation, especially in Burgenland, is dramatic, up to 600 people would be arrested every day, Gerald Tatzgern, head of anti-smuggling crime at the federal police, said in the Krone Live Talk with Jana Pasching.
In the future, Tatzgern says, one must be prepared and prepared for more violence by people smugglers and sometimes by migrants against the police. “Some migrants are informed by the smugglers, they are told that the police are the bad guys.” This is not an easy job, especially on the Hungarian border. The smugglers sometimes enforced their affairs with brutal measures.
