After the tragic train accident on 9 May in Mödling (Lower Austria), the driver has now been reported. The train ran fast and derailed. One passenger died in the serious accident and others were injured, some seriously.
The man is charged with negligently endangering the community, spokesman Erich Habitzl confirmed in a “Kurier” report requested by APA. A trial date has not yet been set.
Way above the speed limit
The suspect is charged with a “care breach,” Habitzl said. The driver would have increased the speed far above the permitted speed. Despite an emergency stop, the train derailed. The “Ventus” train of the Raaberbahn, with about 70 passengers, is said to have passed a switch in Münchendorf on its way from Deutschkreutz (Oberpullendorf district) in Burgenland to Vienna at 145 instead of 60 km/h.
Imprisonment of up to one year possible
One of the six cars of the double set was supported in a field. A second had broken down on the side of the dike next to the railway. The other four cars jumped off the tracks. If convicted, the Hungarian citizen risks a prison sentence of up to one year or a fine.
The deceased passenger was a 25-year-old from Eisenstadt. The 52-year-old train driver and two passengers from Vienna, a woman (35) and a man (78), were seriously injured, according to earlier information. Other passengers suffered minor injuries.
