A devastating fire broke out at a substation in Seeboden in Carinthia on Friday. The transformer exploded before the installation could be disconnected from the power supply.
The fire broke out around 10 a.m. Friday at the substation in the Wirlsdorf district of Seeboden. “Because the system was still live during the fire, the Kelag emergency service had to be notified first to completely disconnect the transformer station from the power supply,” said a police officer.
Hundreds of homes without electricity
Meanwhile, the flames continued to spread in the transformer, resulting in two explosions. “The fire went out on its own after that,” said the fire service. After the system was taken off the grid, it was opened so that the Seeboden volunteer fire brigade could carry out the after-extinguishing and security work.
Work continues
“The repair work will last until about 6 pm. During this time, several hundred households in the Wirlsdorf district will be without electricity,” explains an official. It is still unclear what caused the fire. Material damage of tens of thousands of euros was caused at the substation. Fortunately no one was injured.
